Think Like The Common Internet User

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got to the point of complete and utter frustration with an offer you’re trying to run.  Everything you do just seems to fail.  It happens to the best of us.  If your already getting cheap traffic, targeted towards your landing page and it’s still not converting, you probably have to work on your landing page.  Chances are you already did this as well.  You’ve tried multiple angles, wording, imagery, styles, but it’s still not working.  What’s a pimp to do?  Get help!

When I say “Get Help” I don’t even mean go to a landing page designer or someone in the business.  Help can come from the most overlooked of sources; your family and friends.  As internet marketers, we know the internet.  We know it inside and out and know how everything works.  What we often don’t realize is that the common folk, aren’t as experienced on the net as we are.  For this reason you may find family and friends giving you insight into your landing pages that you never realized before.  If a family member doesn’t understand an element of your landing page, chances are the public may not understand it either.

True Story:  I’ve been trying to get a particular offer to convert and turn a profit for a few weeks now.  Most attempts were failures even though the ideas behind how to promote the offer were awesome.  I came up with a spin on what I was doing and ran it by my wife.  She said that people wouldn’t understand my concept.  I re-pitched her the concept another way and she liked it.  We sat down TOGETHER and she critiqued my landing page and it’s wording as I created it.  We bounced ideas off of each other and since she is much more detached from internet marketing then I am, she pointed out things that I wouldn’t notice but a common internet user may.  Things like the phrase “double opt in.”  I know what it is, but not everyone may.  Long story short, the campaign went from a loser to 100% ROI.

The point here is that if your having trouble getting a campaign to convert, you need to get yourself a little focus group.  Show your landing page to your friends or your family and see if they understand the points you are trying to make.  If they don’t it’s time to rework the page.

    Great post! Something to think of.

  2. So does your wife do usability consulting now?

    That is such a good and simple idea. My wife is always wanting to get involved and I often forget that she is smarter than me!!

    Well done on the ROI.

    @Jim – She’s available for consulting 😉

    …she’s not cheap though 🙂

  4. LOL I’m trying to come back with something witty……but whatever I say is going to be wrong.

    Anyways, it did give me a light bulb moment as most of the thought provoking posts on your blog do.

    I did exactly same thing when I tried to replicate killer ringtone campaigns for UK. My wife pointed out in UK we call them mobiles where in the US it’s a cell phone.

    I think for that reason some of these acai offers with 5 countries are never going to work. Localised content is the way forward.

    Great tip man 🙂 Sometimes we just need to stop thinking like a marketer, and think like a customer.
